BIO: Born February 27, 1807, in Portland, Maine, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was to become the most popular poet of his time. After graduating from nearby Bowdoin College in 1825, he traveled widely in Europe writing poetry and experiencing life, eventually returning to accept a teaching position at Harvard, where he cut quite a dashing figure with his manelike hair, yellow gloves, and flowered waistcoats. Longfellow loved simple rhyme and elegant verse: his ballads, "The Village Blacksmith" and "The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere" are favorites with teachers and school children all over the world.
